You won’t make it through the rest of this week without making 10, 20 or even 50 mistakes.
In fact, you may make twice as many.
That’s because making mistakes is part of human nature.
No one is perfect, but it seems we’re all superstars at making mistakes.
So why do we all try to fight this? Why are we all so scared of getting things wrong?
Making Mistakes Can Be Scary
I believe our obsession with perfection has a lot to do with the way we are brought up.
From a very early age you learn at home, at school, in your job and so on – that there are consequences for making mistakes.
If your upbringing was anything like mine, you probably learned that:
- Mistakes are painful.
- Mistakes are costly.
- Mistakes waste time.
So you vowed to avoid them at all costs.
The flip side of the coin is that it turns you into someone who is risk-averse and scared of making mistakes.
This might not be an issue in general but it is problematic if you want to turn your passion into a lifestyle business.
Because when you’re starting a business you’re in unknown territory for much of the time.
Even if you follow a proven blueprint every entrepreneur starts the same way – filled with uncertainty, groping in the dark towards success.
A lot of time is spent learning and experimenting only to fail time and time again.
Your Mind Stops You From Making Mistakes
In the early days of your business it’s important to realize that your mind is in overdrive.
It will perceive anything that is unfamiliar as a potential threat because your mind’s number one priority is to protect you from harm.
So when it senses danger – real or imagined – it goes into a state of high alert.
It will present you with 101 different scenarios to stop you from doing anything that is remotely risky and force you to race back to the safety of your comfort zone.
It might feed you lies like “your business idea is flawed” or “your marketing plan is too risky” or that the product you’re about to launch is not good enough.
It may even remind you of past failures and how you messed up before so why should this time be any different.
In moments like this, old fears come rushing to the surface.
Whatever beliefs you have about risk and failure take over. Feelings of guilt and shame reawaken and paralyze you into inaction.
So you do nothing.
This is how millions of budding entrepreneurs stay stuck and never reaching their true potential because they allow themselves to be defeated.
Don’t let this be you.
If you want to escape from where you are and do what you love, it’s time to start thinking and acting differently.
You Must Embrace Your Mistakes
It’s important to understand that progress can only happen when you embrace your imperfection.
You are a work in progress and so is your business.
Instead of beating up on yourself for making mistakes, let go of the past.
See your wrong turns as exactly that.
Twists and turns in the road or diversions that have helped you arrive at this point as a wiser, stronger and better person.
Reframe your mistakes as exciting learning opportunities that are helping you build your new future.
There is no other way to move forward in life and business than by making mistakes – and learning from them.
None of us are born knowing everything.
So you don’t have to have it all worked out before you start your online business.
You can start right here, right now, with the resources at your disposal. Just do your best and keep building on that.
There are also no guarantees in life.
It’s impossible to eliminate every possible risk no matter how hard you try.
Things will go wrong. It will probably take longer than you think. And the chances are high that it will cost more than you bargained for.
But none of this matters if you start seeing your mistakes as an investment in experience.
Thomas Edison famously said,
“I have not failed. I just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
So the more you make mistakes, and the more you learn from them and avoid making them over and over again, the closer you will get to your dream life.
You will be further along the road to success than the person who is too afraid of making mistakes in the first place.
This is the magical catch.
If you make more mistakes than anyone else you will naturally have more experience to show for it. But you’ll also have more knowledge, a stronger character and a greater understanding of what it takes to succeed.
In order to live a life that you love you must be willing to fail over and over again and pick yourself up each time.
Let yourself be pulled by your dreams rather than held back by your fears, doubts and excuses. Take a deep breath, be brave and give yourself permission to keep making mistakes until you master what you have to learn.
Failing forward is not easy and it’s often painful but it can be a powerful way to accelerate your progress in life as well as in business.
I love its simple wisdom and hope it encourages you to not be afraid of making mistakes. As long as you keep learning from your mistakes, they can put you on the true path to freedom.
