What do you expect in your life? It’s probably not a question many of us consciously ask ourselves. But if you want to know what you’ve been expecting lately, take a look at your results.
Are you experiencing abundant happiness, good health and incredible success? Or are your days filled with stress and chaos as you lurch from one crisis to another?
I was recently speaking to a client who was going through a hard time in her business.
An associate had cheated her out of some money, a deal she was banking on had fallen through at the last minute and to top it all, she had just been hit with a large, unexpected tax bill.
As she talked, it was clear that while she wanted success, subconsciously she was expecting the opposite. Her apprehension and uncertainty about her business were attracting the very things she was trying to avoid.
We Get What We Expect
In life you often get what you expect, not what you want.
If you expect good things to happen, they have a way of showing up in your life. But if you expect bad things to happen, they have a habit of showing up too.
Positive expectation is essential if you want to create a success mindset.
Some people grow up with the ability to think and act positively but anyone can cultivate it with a little self-discipline.
Having this kind of perspective removes fear and doubt from your life and replaces them with certainty about achieving a successful outcome.
Even if things don’t work out exactly as you envisaged, you know you will find a way to overcome any obstacles and keep moving in the right direction.
We Are Conditioned To Aim Low
In the UK we are encouraged to set our expectations low from the time we go to school. Our education system has been dumbed down over the years. Our national sports teams don’t seem to improve year on year. And we are told over and over not to “get our hopes up” and that “winning isn’t everything” to avoid disappointment.
Unlike in the US, confidence is associated with arrogance, an unattractive and very un-British quality.
I’m convinced this attitude makes failure and risk-taking that much harder to bear. It also spreads ordinariness like an epidemic. As a result, many people don’t aim high.
They settle for what they can get.
Those who do strive for more often expect the worst to happen while hoping and praying for the best. It’s no wonder then that so many of us find it difficult to break free of mediocrity and create a happier, richer, greater life for ourselves.
What Are You Expecting?
In his classic work, “Working With The Law” Raymond Holliwell says,
“Never expect a thing you don’t want and never desire a thing you don’t expect. When you expect something you do not want, you attract the undesirable, and when you desire a thing that is not expected, you simply dissipate valuable mental force.”
Holliwell, one of my favorite authors, is telling us to guard our thoughts and align our desires with our expectations.
There is no point wanting something if you don’t believe you will get it. That’s just wishful thinking and a total waste of time and energy.
Similarly, you should never focus your attention on something that you don’t want to happen because you are setting up a negative expectation.
When you constantly expect the very best things to materialize in your life and act with certainty that they are on their way, your ability to attract them becomes irresistible.
Why You Must “Act As If”
Take a look at this short video where Oprah is talking about the power of expectation and how to attract what you want into your life by believing in yourself.
Oprah says that quite often when we desire change, we end up focusing on what we don’t have and what we don’t want. This creates a tension because we end up living in a space of “what we don’t have” that repels the things we want.
She advises us to act as if we already have what we want if we want to achieve our goals.
If you want change in your life start expecting it with your heart and mind. Nurture your desires and expect to see what you want to see. Act with absolute certainty that whatever you want is on its way to you, no matter how impossible your situation may seem right now.
Hold onto your vision and take the next steps that appear right in front of you, while keeping an eye on your long-range goals. All the while, be confident that your expectations are being fulfilled.
Visualize getting the bank loan you’ve applied for as you work on other aspects of your business. See yourself attaining the qualification you’re studying for as you complete your coursework. Imagine you are winning those deals while you write your proposal.
Expectation is a powerful attractive force and the key element to manifesting your desires. All it takes is a single decision to aim higher and expect more from life.
