Do you believe you can design your life and directly influence your destiny?
Many people dream about having a better life, being happier, more successful and enjoying loving relationships. They wish, want and pray for many wonderful things to come into their life with all their heart.
But they rarely get them.
Why is this?
Why do so few of us ever live the lifestyle we desire?
I think it’s because many of us don’t realize that we have the power to make our dream life happen right here and now. We don’t believe we can change or that we are the ultimate author of our life; the person who can write (and rewrite) the script, tell the story of who we are and who we want to become.
Our dream life won’t magically fall into place at some point in the future. We have to start creating it now – with our thoughts, our feelings and our actions.
These are powerful ideas that the majority of people never pay much attention to.
But if you want to design your life on your terms, then you must get intentional about how you spend your time and how you respond to everything that happens to you.
Take a look at this fantastic video by Brendon Burchard, New York Times bestselling author, speaker and trainer on high performance and marketing.
In it, Brendon discusses how to consciously design your life and mentions 3 simple things you need to do each day. I don’t want to spoil the video for you so I urge you to take out 10 minutes to watch it for yourself before you read on.
According to Brendon, in order to design your life, you must become purposeful in 3 key areas of your life:
The 3 Keys To Design Your Life
#1. Design The Person You Want To Be
How are you going to become that amazing, strong, kind, loving person you aspire to be?
It won’t happen by accident sometime in the future.
You become the person of tomorrow by being that person today. By being purposeful and building your character in the face of challenges. Even though you can’t always control what happens to you, you can certainly decide how you will respond.
This is how you get closer to the destiny you desire.
#2. Design Your Day
You’ve probably heard the saying that energy flows where attention goes. So where are you putting your focus and attention today?
Are you working steadily on moving your business forward or are you chatting to friends on Facebook or chasing the latest “shiny object” promising instant online riches?
Too many of us live reactively.
We fall prey to daily distractions like checking emails and chatting on social media instead of doing the things that can create the biggest shifts and help us get closer to our dreams – like connecting with the people who matter and seizing the right opportunities at the right time.
In order to design your life, you need to control how you spend your day and eliminate the things that waste time and kill your productivity.
At the same time, you need to project forwards and start developing the skills that your business or future self require such as learning to blog, how to write sales copy or use Facebook ads to market your business.
If you don’t have the resources to hire this kind of expertise like many startups, then you must put in the work today to develop these skills because they won’t happen by osmosis.
#3. Design How You Deal With Fate
Whether you believe in fate, luck and destiny – or not – there’s no denying that life throws up many surprises every day, both good and bad. Brendon calls these 3 characters:
i) Struggle & Suffering
ii) Blessings & Gifts
iii) Love & Loss
Things go wrong in life. It is an inevitable part of being human.
But if we know and accept this in advance, whenever we experience pain, challenges and struggle we can choose how we respond.
This is an incredibly empowering mindset to have.
Instead of falling into a black hole of despair every time tragedy strikes, you can take a deep breath and dictate how you will respond in line with the person you want to become.
You don’t have to react the way you always did. You don’t have to be the person you’ve always been.
By choosing to stand up for yourself, or by doing things differently bit by bit you are on your way to becoming that new person.
To consciously design your life, you need to appreciate the many gifts and blessings you already have.
Life may not be a bed of roses but it’s also very rarely a bed of thorns.
Don’t let a bad moment make you think you have a bad life.
Be grateful for the people you love and spend time with them before it’s too late.
I lost my dad at the tender age of 14 so I never got to know him as an adult. But he was a great man and my hero.
I sense his presence every day and remind myself that his legacy lives on through me. It’s what drives me to do meaningful work.
That’s why I encourage you to appreciate everyone and everything in your life. Celebrate all your successes, great and small because whatever we appreciate, appreciates.
