I didn’t grow up appreciating Bruce Lee or his wisdom. In fact, if I’m totally honest this famous martial artist was a nuisance in my household.
Like many kids growing up in the 1980s, my three brothers were crazy about Bruce Lee. He was their idol and they would sit glued to the TV set for hours on Saturday mornings.
And unfortunately for me and my sisters, this meant that my brothers would go round the house practicing their Kung Fu moves on us!
So it’s fair to say that Bruce Lee didn’t really resonate with me – both as a female and due to my early experience.
It was only later in life when I developed an interest in Eastern philosophy that I started reading about Bruce Lee’s life, his achievements and the challenges he overcame to become the greatest Oriental star in the USA.
Besides his skills as a martial artist Bruce Lee was an amazing human being who has inspired millions around the world long after his passing. He achieved more in his short life than many do in a lifetime, and much of this success came down to the way he thought or his mindset.
In case you aren’t familiar with Bruce Lee’s wisdom, or don’t think his message speaks to you, here are 10 inspiring Bruce Lee quotes which will encourage you to think deeply about your life, go after your dreams and achieve success.
10 Top Bruce Lee Quotes For A Successful Life
1. Your Power To Choose
“Choose the positive. You have a choice. You are the master of your attitude. Choose the positive, the constructive. Optimism is a faith that leads to success.”
This is one of the most famous quotes by Bruce Lee and is a powerful reminder that at any time in your life you have the power to choose.
You may not be able to control everything that happens to you, but you can control the way you think and feel about it.
- You can decide whether to react angrily to a trigger or respond intelligently.
- You can make happiness your top priority in life or you can choose misery.
- You can be grateful for what you have as you go for what you want or you can complain and moan.
If you want to be successful in life it’s important to master your mind and train yourself to be optimistic. Always look for the positive in any situation, especially the underlying lesson that can help you do things differently or become a better person.
Developing a positive attitude will help you see opportunities instead of problems. It will help you stay motivated and keep moving forwards in life, no matter how slowly.
2. Be Authentic
“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”
I have said in several of my posts that we are all born with unique gifts, talents and skills and our purpose is to share them with the world.
It’s important to take the time to know yourself and find out what you want to do with your life. The things that you are passionate about are not random but signposts on your path that can lead you to your life purpose.
That’s why it is so important to let your true personality shine, even if you’re scared.
This is particularly important when it comes to your online business.
It’s ok to be inspired by others but if you start to copy them then you move away from your center. You never find your voice and end up attracting people who don’t resonate with the real you but the fake self you have created.
It takes courage and faith to reveal your true self but if you’re reading this then it’s time to step out from the shadows and stop hiding your light.
3. Take Action
“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”
Most people try to get things perfect before they take action. They read all the books, buy all the courses, attend all the events but they never apply that knowledge.
If you notice these tendencies in yourself then I understand because I used to be a perfectionist.
My overthinking held me back for years. It stopped me from taking action because I had a deep-seated fear of failure. It was only when I started taking action BEFORE I was ready that my business grew.
The truth is you don’t need to be perfect to begin with. You just need to be good enough.
If you possess more knowledge than the next person or have mastered something in your life that others need help with, this is plenty to start with.
The people you are trying to reach don’t want perfection. They want a solution to their problem.
So drop the excuses and take action today.
The sooner you start, the sooner you can help them. And the sooner you can experience the success you deserve.
4. Don’t Waste Time
“If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of.”
Life is precious but it is also short.
Ask yourself do you live to work or work to live? There’s a big difference and it’s important to get the balance right if you want to lead a happy and successful life.
Start by minimizing your daily distractions.
Social media, emails, phone calls and unnecessary meetings are all major time sucks that can drain you of your creativity.
I recommend you don’t check your emails first thing and manage your day so you do the most important tasks first.
For instance, I like to get my day off to a strong start with these 5 morning rituals. Then, I take all the tasks on my to-do list and tackle the most unpleasant one first. It’s a strategy I learned from Brian Tracy and helps me break down any resistance.
It also gives me my “win for the day” or a sense of achievement. No matter what else happens, I know that my day has been a success because I have accomplished one key thing.
If you can learn to manage your time and get important tasks done early on, you will be amazed by the difference it makes to your productivity levels and how much time you have for yourself.
5. Ignore Criticism
“I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.”
This is one of my favorite quotes by Bruce Lee.
You have to accept that you won’t be able to please everyone all the time. Nor should you try to.
Some people will criticize you and try to tear you down no matter what you do. Remember it’s probably less about you and more about them and their “stuff”.
Don’t spend your life trying to please others or figuring out why they say and do certain things.
The best thing is to avoid negative people altogether but if they are family members then it’s not always possible. In such instances, limit the time you spend with them.
You don’t need anyone’s approval to succeed. You will also be much happier if you focus on your own life and stay away from naysayers.
Just do what you love, keep moving and don’t look back.
6. You Become What You Think
“As you think, so shall you become.”
Buddha said it. So did the Bible. And many thinkers since including Bruce Lee tell us that we become what we think about.
This is the Law Of Attraction at its most basic level.
Whatever you think about most of the time you draw into your life.
Every human being possesses incredible manifesting abilities and we generate everything in our lives through our thinking and feeling.
If you are happy and positive you can’t help but magnetize positive people and experiences to you.
Equally, if you are unhappy and negative, then you will attract more negativity into your life.
If your life is less than ideal right now, instead of fighting what’s wrong, decide what you want, set some goals and start taking action towards your new life.
The results will astound you.
7. Develop Mastery
“I fear not the man who has practice 10,000 different kicks, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
Bruce Lee’s message is clear.
Instead of trying to be and do all things, focus on being an expert at one thing.
What one thing can you specialize in and become the best in the world at?
This is a scary thought for most of us because we’re taught to multi-task and diversify.
The truth is that very few people ever develop mastery in a subject. Either they can’t be bothered, they don’t know where to start or it takes too long.
But what if you did this?
How successful could you be if you served a specific group of people better than anyone else?
No one is born with this level of mastery. It takes dedication, practice and most of all time – around 10,000 hours according to Malcolm Gladwell.
The thing is, this time will pass whether or not you do the work.
So why not take small steps every day towards your goal and dedicate yourself to mastering everything you can about your niche? You’ll be surprised at how much expertise you can develop in a few short years.
8. Define Your Destiny
“To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities.”
Ask any successful person and you’ll learn that they created their own opportunities. They put in the hours, they made the sacrifices and they worked on their business as well as themselves to get to where they are.
There are no shortcuts to success.
Sure, some people have more money than you. They may live in a country that is more conducive to entrepreneurial success or have better connections, the right background or education.
But in every city, in every country on every continent there are ordinary people like you and me who have become a success.
This means that you can do the same.
If you want a better life, don’t wait for a miracle to happen. No one is going to hand you your dream life on a plate.
You have to do it for yourself.
So stop making excuses and start taking responsibility.
You might not be able to make a huge leap today but you can take baby steps towards your goals.
9. Keep Things Simple
“Simplicity is the key to brilliance.”
I used to be proud of my ability to multi-task and cross off all the items on my to-do list. My life was an endless list of projects that needed to be tightly managed and controlled.
It’s no surprise that I was stressed most of the time and eventually burned out.
That’s when I decided to simplify my life.
Instead of trying to do lots of things at the same time and invariably failing, I decided to drop everything and get intentional about one main goal.
A strange thing happened when I became single-minded.
The stress melted away. I felt happier. And my productivity went through the roof.
But most of all, other aspects of my life started falling into place – as if by magic.
The lesson here is that when you focus on one goal, you achieve far more that if you try to juggle multiple tasks or try to make things too complicated.
Find the simplest way to get to the next stage in your business and your life. Stick to that task until you complete it and only then move on to the next thing.
10. Be Flexible
“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.”
The bamboo metaphor Bruce Lee uses is a very vivid one.
You probably know someone who is so rigid and unwilling to change their perspective, habits or routine that they end up breaking at the first sign of a storm.
Maybe you are like this.
Being flexible in the face of challenges is an important trait that every entrepreneur needs to develop. Things often go wrong in business so you must be able to “bend” but “not break” when you experience difficulties.
One thing is certain – life is unpredictable.
Therefore, you must get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable. This is how we grow as human beings and it is a fundamental aspect of success.
It’s what separates the doers from the dreamers, successful people from unsuccessful people.
So if you hit a bump in the road, don’t give up.
Change your plan or tweak your strategy if you have to but keep your eye on your goal. Above all, look for the lesson because every negative experience brings with it a blessing in disguise.
I hope these 10 Bruce Lee quotes speak to you as they do to me. There are loads more I could have included but I wanted to give you the highlights not a complete list.
I’m sure that many of these great quotes don’t tell you anything you don’t already know.
I like to be reminded of such pearls of wisdom and sometimes having them expressed in a new or simpler way really helps you see yourself and your life differently.
Are you a fan of Bruce Lee quotes? Does one of these sayings resonate in particular for you or do you have another personal favorite not on this list?
