When you hear the word “meditate,” does your mind conjure up images of Buddhist monks, martial artists and hippies?
If so, you may feel like meditation could never fit into your busy, modern life.
I thought this for many years.
Even though I was raised in a home that was heavily influenced by Eastern traditions, meditation wasn’t one of them.
As I got older and started my career, I developed a more rational way of thinking.
It never occurred to me to meditate because I didn’t associate it with success, only with arty types or hippies
I was also always busy so the idea of sitting still and doing nothing seemed like a complete waste of time.
But then years later, I hit a brick wall.
I was going through a stressful time with my business and having problems sleeping. I couldn’t focus on my work and was constantly worrying.
A friend told me about meditation and recommended a local class to get me started. I went along and was instantly hooked.
I’ve now been meditating daily for over 3 years and haven’t looked back.
Meditation has had a profound effect on my life. I’m happier and more creative than I’ve ever been, I get more “stuff” done than most and attract clients without any marketing.
And I’m not the only one!
Many people all over the world, in all walks of life, and throughout history have fervently believed that meditation is the greatest tool available to each of us to renew our mind, body, heart and soul.
But meditation isn’t just for yogis, monks and hippies.
Many famous people, including celebrities, top athletes and successful entrepreneurs swear by meditation.
Why, when these people have every reason to be content with their lives – they are rich, beautiful, successful and adored by fans all over the world – do they even need to meditate?
Quite simply, they meditate because it helps them consistently perform at peak levels. They believe meditation is an essential tool for their personal development and professional growth.
The same applies to you.
As an entrepreneur, you’ll have to take risks, make critical, sometimes life-changing decisions, learn who to trust in business and be able to communicate effectively with others to achieve your goals.
To handle such situations and deal with the constant day-to-day pressures of starting and growing your online business, I’m sure you’ll achieve more if you meditate.
So if you haven’t yet made meditating a daily habit, take a look at these 9 reasons to meditate and discover the incredible benefits that you could be missing out on.
9 Reasons To Meditate
1. Increase Self Awareness
You’ve heard people talk about “being true to yourself” and “authenticity” but what does this really mean?
Self awareness is about knowing yourself, your values, your strengths and weaknesses, your deepest desires and motivations.
In other words, it’s what makes you tick.
But unless you know these aspects of your personality, you will never discover what you want in life and you’ll never be able to make the most of opportunities that come your way.
Sadly, most people are riddled with uncertainty.
They don’t know who they really are or what they stand for. That’s why they always need other people’s advice and approval.
Meditation gives you clarity about you and your life. It helps you connect with your true feelings and desires by increasing your self awareness.
When you sit in silence for a few minutes every day, you learn to tune in to your inner voice.
It’s always there, speaking to you and guiding you, but it gets drowned out by the thousands of other thoughts bombarding your mind.
When you meditate, your mind can pick up and process these subtle signals. And the more you meditate, the stronger your self awareness becomes.
It’s like a muscle that strengthens with regular exercise.
Meditation can train your mind to become more aware of what you think, how you think, what you feel, and what you truly desire.
Without that kind of clarity it’s much easier to be affected by external factors that can draw you away from who you truly are and what you really want.
What would it be like to be able to make the right decisions almost instantly? To be so fully aware of what you want that you don’t have to dwell on possibilities, but are able to tap into your intuition at will?
This could make all the difference between living the life you want and settling for the life you have.
2. Calm Your Mind
You have within you, right now, greater resources to relieve stress and anxiety than you can ever imagine.
When you meditate, you have the power to distance yourself from the world including all the stresses, conflicts and worries that are weighing you down.
You become an observer of your own reality, as if you are watching a television show or movie about someone else’s life.
You gain an objective detachment from the emotionally-loaded situations of your daily life.
This detachment grounds you and brings a reassuring calmness. You get a mental rest without even leaving your four walls. Believe me, it’s the cheapest, most effective vacation you’ll ever have!
Meditation helps you deal with your challenges in a detached, calm and intelligent manner. You will respond better to situations because you won’t be a slave to the moment or have a knee-jerk reaction to whatever you’re facing.
3. Manage Your Emotions
Meditation can be a powerful way to help you manage your emotions.
As humans beings we experience a range of feelings every day from happiness to sadness, love to anger, enthusiasm to boredom.
Sometimes we’re aware of our emotions, other times we’re not because they are so deep-seated.
It’s not until something or someone pushes our buttons that we react and negative emotions like anger, jealousy, resentment and so on rise to the surface.
- A friend says or does something hurtful and you get upset.
- A business deal doesn’t go the way you wanted so you feel disappointed and start doubting yourself.
- Your website is hacked and you become frustrated and angry.
Many people live their lives in reaction like a human pinball machine.
But it doesn’t have to be like this.
Most of us don’t realize that we can develop the ability to control our emotions.
Meditation is a very effective tool for managing your emotions.
It can help you deliberately choose not to get sucked into negativity.
The more you meditate the more control you have over your emotions and the easier it becomes to choose positive thoughts and emotions.
4. Develop Your Creativity
Did you know that you probably only access about 1% of your true potential?
That’s the percentage of your conscious mind that most of us utilize. The remaining 99% is your subconscious mind.
And it’s in this untapped 99% that your genius resides.
When you meditate, you can access the 99% of your potential and power that has eluded you for most of your life.
Brilliant people like Thomas Edison, Leonardo Da Vinci, Buddha, Confucius, and Albert Einstein all drew their greatest inspiration from the revelations that lie in the subconscious mind.
Some of the most talented people of our day tap into it naturally, to great results.
If you need answers to a frustrating problem or if you’re looking for new ideas or insights, meditation will help you access your full mental potential and find new perspectives that your conscious mind might never discover.
5. Deep Relaxation
Have you ever experienced burnout?
Burnout happens when you focus your attention on work or responsibilities continuously, without ever taking any real breaks or getting true rest.
But it’s the sheer number of thoughts that you think that drain you because you never really switch off.
Research suggests that we think around 50,000 thoughts a day, most of them nonsense and negative. Only a tiny number of thoughts are actually beneficial.
As a result, we become mentally, emotionally and physically spent.
Burnout isn’t good and it’s obviously not very productive. But it’s what will happen if you refuse to slow down, control your mind and allow yourself rest.
Meditation is the perfect way to do just that.
A computer has to be defragged and debugged on a regular basis if you want to keep it functioning at its best. All of the needless and harmful files dragging it down have to be deleted. Out of date software needs to be updated so that it can run to its full spec.
The same is true of the super-computer that is your mind.
You need to relax daily and there is no more effective way to deep, restorative relaxation than meditation.
6. Sleep Better
All over the world, people lie awake at night, tossing and turning, unable to get some much-needed shut-eye.
Until recently, I was one of them.
Lack of sleep was a normal way of life as I dragged myself though my working day.
The truth is that sleep loss is not acceptable and is downright dangerous.
It leads to increased anxiety, stress, weight gain and even depression.
You might think you can manage without much sleep but missing just an hour or two of sleep can have a profound effect on your brain, overall health and productivity.
When you meditate, you are able to still the thoughts that race through your mind. It becomes easier to slip into a restful night’s sleep.
Meditation also improves the quality of the sleep you get, sorting out the clutter that gathers in your mind and finding solutions to your pressing issues while you rest.
7. Become More Spiritual
The self awareness you gain when you meditate will lead to greater spiritual awareness too.
I believe there is a place for spirituality in business. It doesn’t have to be separate to the way you operate. You can be spiritual in business because you are already a spiritual being.
You don’t need to force anything or do anything different.
You just need to be willing to become more conscious.
When you meditate on a regular basis, you will find that your intuition or your “sixth sense” heightens.
You become more sensitive to inner hunches, you trust your gut feelings more and become acutely aware of the subtle energies around every person and situation.
This has been a huge shift for me because until recently I ignored this inner intelligence.
I relied on my logical mind. I trusted what people told me and what I perceived outwardly, to my own detriment.
Since learning to meditate though my intuition has gone through the roof. It guides all my decisions, a bit like my own inner GPS.
Meditation also strengthens your connection to a greater power.
Now, I’m not religious but I do believe we have a Creator.
It doesn’t matter if you are religious though because meditation is for everyone and anyone. It complements your religious beliefs whatever they may be.
I have attended meditation workshops with people from different religious backgrounds and cultures and it always amazes me how much benefit everyone gets from meditating.
Chances are meditation will make you a better Christian, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Agnostic, Atheist or anything else.
When you are able to remove yourself from your immediate situation and become a detached observer, you see the bigger picture. That bigger picture can be as wide as you choose to make it – from life itself to a grand vision of the cosmos.
You see the connectedness in everyone and everything regardless our outward differences, including religious beliefs.
8. Boost Your Productivity
Would you like to get more done in less time?
Meditation can help you do just that.
It changes the way you feel about whatever you are experiencing right now in your life. It helps you stay present so you are less likely to be held back by the past or fears for the future.
As a result, you become laser-focused on your goals.
You’re able to see what you need to do and the best way to go about doing it, without being distracted by the negativity you once carried inside.
While others hesitate or overthink because everything they do, encounter, and feel is clouded by doubt and fear, you are like a rocket hurtling towards your goals; detached, focused and therefore able to fly.
Through regular meditation you will become more focused, efficient, attentive, and receptive. And when you increase those aspects of your consciousness, you can truly maximize your life.
9. Be Happier
We all want happiness. Probably more than anything else.
It’s the greatest motivation in life.
While you will feel happier after just one 20-minute meditation session, with dedication and practice, the benefits of meditation can quickly compound to give you a greater sense of fulfillment and joy for life each and every day.
When you develop mastery over yourself – over your mind and your emotions – and stop letting the past and concerns over your future affect you, you become more positive.
You start to feel good inside, you tend to look for the best in people and you expect only good things to happen.
And they do!
This is how each one of us can change our life at a very deep level.
A daily practice of meditation encourages optimism and generates an enthusiasm and appreciation for life regardless your present circumstances.
From one day to the next you can develop a new way of thinking and being, even if you have been unhappy, unproductive and unsuccessful for years.
If you have never meditated before and would like to explore meditation a great way to start is with these Guided Meditations which I personally recommend and use on a daily basis.
