Many people aspire to be a millionaire. Perhaps you do too.
Recently, I re-read the #1 best-selling book Conversations With Millionaires co-authored by Mike Litman and Jason Oman. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors several years ago during a trip to the USA and highly recommend this book if you want to achieve great success and accomplish the goals you have set yourself.
Not all of the interviews will resonate with you but those that do could be life-changing. Each interviewee has a distinct personality and perspective on the secret to their success. I therefore recommend you take plenty of notes and get your highlighter pen ready.
In this post I am going to summarize my #5 key takeaways from the interviews and what you need to do to achieve personal success.
Achieving Success In Life
Many people spend their whole lives searching for a blueprint that will help them achieve millionaire status. But there is no magic bullet. It is actually very difficult to reproduce the exact actions and circumstances that other millionaires and successful people have taken to attain their wealth.
What worked for them may not work for you.
Instead, we need to look at the belief system and the thought processes that have helped these self-made millionaires create success (as opposed to those who have married into wealth or inherited it) and apply these ideas in our own lives.
Here are 5 proven strategies guaranteed to dramatically improve your happiness, and help you in achieving success in any area of your life, if you apply them.
1. Find A Reason
Jim Rohn talks about the importance of having a reason. If you have a big enough reason to do something then you can do anything.
You’ll read all the books in order to master your subject area. You’ll work all the hours God sends, even if you’re holding down a day job or two.
You’ll stick with a project long enough to see it through long after the honeymoon period has gone.
So let me ask you a question. Do you have a big enough reason? Or are you just playing?
The sad truth is that you may crave personal success, freedom and riches but perhaps you don’t have a big enough reason driving you to make it happen.
Life may not be perfect but it isn’t painful enough for you to change your habits.
Successful people do not settle. They understand success takes hard work and they do whatever it takes. They know that a few months or years of sacrifice now will allow them to eventually live the life of their dreams.
So start by getting clear on why you want change. The clearer you are, the easier it is to execute your plans and make things happen.
2. Work On Yourself
Jim Rohn teaches that “If you work hard on your job, you’ll make a living. But if you work hard on yourself, you’ll make a fortune”. In other words, you attract success by becoming a bigger, better version of you.
Most people have this equation in reverse. They postpone their lives until the money comes rolling in. But the millionaires interviewed in this book did not start out wanting to become millionaires for the sake of the money alone.
They discovered that their greatest pleasure came from the journey that took them to their destination and overcoming numerous setbacks and failures along the way.
In the process, they developed new skills; they learned about business, they understood their audience, they practiced time management and discovered how to work effectively with other people.
So set a goal to become a millionaire for what it makes of you to achieve it. Do it for the skills you have to learn and the person you have to become.
During your journey to personal success, you will need to master not only the outer game of business but the inner game of self.
Working daily on yourself will help you manage your emotions, strengthen your commitment, make you more disciplined and eventually get you from where you are to where you want to be.
3. Take Responsibility
Wherever you are today is a result of decisions you’ve made in the past. Maybe some of those choices worked out for you whilst others didn’t. Whatever the case may be, it’s time to let the past go and stop beating up on yourself.
Take responsibility for the choices you’ve made but learn from them and move on. This includes your thinking as well as your actions.
One of the biggest lessons from this book is that truly successful people are proactive thinkers. They take complete control of their minds and are responsible for the outcomes in every area of their lives.
You must let go of the mistakes but don’t lose the lesson. Don’t dwell on the pain of your past, instead focus on the vision you have for the future and let that motivate and inspire you.
This frame of mind alone can turn your life around.
4. Overcome Procrastination
The Jack Canfield interview is very insightful on the topic of self-esteem which he likens to having poker chips.
When you have a lot of chips or high self-esteem you are more confident and tend to take more risks.
Procrastination masks self-doubt and afflicts most of us at one time or another.
Most people procrastinate about doing something because they fear failure. For example, if you’re procrastinating about starting your new business or learning how to use social media, take classes, hire a tutor or find a mentor.
If that skill is necessary to help you achieve an important goal you must do it. Ask yourself what’s the worst that can happen? Yes, you may mess up. But who is judging you and what’s to stop you trying a second time?
One good tip is to do the thing you like least first. The more you put off what you “should” do, the harder it is to get started. This just compounds your anxiety.
Imagine how much better and happier you’ll feel once the task is complete. Then take a deep breath and dive in.
5. Discover Your Passion
Jim McCann founder of 1-800-FLOWERS.com offers some sage advice about business success and achievement.
He states that the real business opportunities are often in areas that aren’t particularly sexy, innovative or high-tech.
Opportunities often start as a passion. The secret is to find something that you are interested in and that gets your juices flowing.
What are you passionate about?
If that is too difficult to answer look at what you are currently doing in your life that you enjoy. How could you take your knowledge, expertise, life experience, talents and interests and package them into something that is marketable?
Stop waiting for that “big idea” to strike. You are already sitting on rich reservoirs of potential. Often it’s just a case of doing something that is already out there better, a little differently or with more creativity and flair.
Remember, there is something unique that only you can do in your own inimitable way.
The overall message of this book is that super successful entrepreneurs approach success in a comprehensive way. They combine visualizing their future with positive, proactive thinking, intelligent daily actions and a spiritual approach founded on serving other people.
Success in life is about much more than just making money. It is about being a complete person and going forward with a purpose and passion.
So if you are seeking the highest levels of personal success and fulfilment you need to focus on your dreams not the fear. You need to develop self-belief and confidently take actions that will help you push through any mental and emotional blocks.
Self improvement needs to become a daily practice if you want to become a successful person. “Who am I?” “What do I want to do?” and “How do I want people to remember me?” are crucial conversations to have if you want to align yourself to success and achievement.
